There is a lot of information on the topic of mental illness these days, especially when it comes to such common chronic issues like depression and Bipolar disorder. If you are experiencing symptoms of either, it is important to know the difference so that you can seek the best possible treatment.
Depression is rather simply defined as any period of prolonged sadness. It has varous other symptoms as well, such as disturbance in appetite and sleep patterns, an unwillingness to participate in activities once enjoyed, or a lack of motivation. In severe cases a person with depression may find themselves unable to get out of bed.
Bipolar disorder is defined as a rapid shift in emotions or moods. It is signaled for many by sudden bouts of ‘mania’, which is an increase in energy, a sudden change in personality, and various other symptoms which last for a period of time, and then are followed by a crash. This crash will be the exact opposite, and closer to depression in symptoms.
There are various other complexities to both mental health problems, so if you suspect you may have either condition, or you are experiencing any other symptoms, talk to your physician.
